New content alert

Thank you so much for sticking with me. I am going to be posting a lot over the next month or so! I have a few ARC’s that I am insanely happy to review…Please enjoy the quotes that will be coming over the next few weeks of posts.

I post some reviews here that I post on Amazon and Goodreads. The rest of the time I am rereading old favorites and new releases. I try not to post spoilers, so I take the quotes that most strongly speak to me and make posts. I find it interesting that each time I reread an old favorite DIFFERENT quotes appeal to me. Sometimes there is overlap but it is infrequent. The human brain is an amazing thing!

Happy reading!

Why I Read… And Who I am Reading…

I am a reader. The thought of going without my books is inconceivable. For the most part, I have my favorites, books that are a comfort no matter what my life throws at me. When I was little, the books were something I needed. I travelled with a copy of “Little Women”. Jo and Beth, Meg and Amy were very real to me. I read that book until it literally fell apart – but it did not matter since they became a part of my brain. I know that they came from another persons brain. I know how much they meant to me. But it wasn’t just them. It was Anne of Green Gables and Pippi Longstocking and Cutter and Leetah. It was Amelia Bedelia and Bedknobs and Broomsticks and a magical doorway to Narnia that kept my imagination in thrall. It was the thought of Tesseracts and the pagentry of fantasy novels and the words of a bard. Its the words of Elizabeth Dickinson and the words of Keats. And, slowly, it became what was the fabric of my life. The threads I can remember, as well as the ones that I didn’t incorporate into my world view.
As an adult, I read everything and found myself finding more companions. Around other things that happened in the real world, there too were the characters of Anne Rice, Nora Roberts and Guy Gavriel Kay. And something amazing came from the books. It was friends who were only a few pages away. They were never too busy. It was the knowledge that, just by reading a book šŸ“–, I could recapture where I was when I read it the first time as well as some of the minutia I had missed the first time around because I wanted to know what happened. Knowing what happened meant I could pay more attention to the characters that were secondary. And, there were times in my adult life when I had to read those treasured pages one word at a time. It was harder that way.
All of this was a little bit away from my main point. I said I was a reader and I am. It means that I escape into those other worlds and learn the rules… Whether it is based on mythology or vampires, society or shapeshifters it gave me an escape and a place to hope and dream about, while my body betrayed me. I also, somewhere along the way, developed a rule that if I started a book, I finished it. And, then, I found myself feeling a drive to finish a series, even if it wasn’t up to my standards. But, I started this blog to highlight one of my favorite authors and the two heroines of her novels. Karen Chance reminded me why she held a place among my favorites with Dragon’s Claw. It’s the latest release of the Dorina Basarab plot line which is a companion to the Cassandra Palmer series. I realized that I had missed Dory and Marlowe. And, reading it, I felt that excitement that comes from a new adventure and some old friends. I cannot wait for the next story.

An interesting read that shows the power of words and regardless of where you are in life the transformation the right book can create

As I read this article I tried to figure out which of my books šŸ“š would get the golden ticket if o had to pick just one. I can’t do it. When I was little I had an early hard cover edition of Little Women which unfortunately got destroyed when I did something nice for someone and it came back to bite me on the ass. And there is Madeline L’engles A Wrinkle in Time, which was one of my husband’s favorites as well and which I read to my girls as I tried to process his death and somehow reading that book to our children helped me. I don’t know how much they remember of the story, but I know they remember the cuddles and the fact I was reading. Then there is the Great Alta trilogy by Jane Yolen, which inspired me so much, and introduced me to the power and joy that can only come from a trilogy.

I don’t know whether you will consider this necessarily a “book”, but the graphic novels of Elfquest–they had just been rereleased for their 20th anniversary and I was on a trip with my best friends family to Hilton Head, and after being so engrossed in Nora Roberts’ Public Secrets (which is another of my influences as life changing) that I spent the whole day at the beach on my stomach which led to a seriously bad burn which led to my father, who was not a fan of me going on the trip in the first place said that was it I was coming home and he sent me a plane ticket. The trip to the airport was a long one and my back was about 6 shades darker then a lobster(and I was in a lot of pain and the trip back home from the car ride to the airplane seat šŸ’ŗ I was about ready to throw in the towel and was an exercise in mind over matter and how ( there is nothing to be done but let time pass and eventually you heal) and the only thing left in the car was my friend’s little brother’s graphic novel. They wouldn’t let me take it home (I was on page 87 and myom met me at the gate of the airport and she wasn’t able to find what I was talking about so I made her stop at the waldenbooks on the way home so I could read the end of story which of course, ironically, is finishing with the final quest this year and which I try to reread every 5 to 7 years.

And then I think of the eye opening Kushiel’s trilogy by Jacqueline Carey that opened a whole new world of series and books and a new world and genre of books and a great group of people…

Hooray, Hooray Hooray today will be a beautiful day…

OK, Fangirl has emerged at this end of the computer. It is completely in charge of all content from this point forward

Seanan McGuire is an amazing writer and has been one of my favorites since I read her first October Daye novel All her book titles come from Shakespeare. Her sarcastic wit, her amazing take on old lore and the incredible way she spun a tale.

When the Incryptid series came along–OMG there is no end to the “soundbite” moments in these books. From the quotes at the beginning of each chapter to the millions of quirky statements made back and forth as well as just the familial dynamics. Add in a world of supernaturals trying to stay under the radar but who nee help to survive, the Price family of cryptozoologists who are familiar enough with all the cryptids unique biology, an organization dedicated to the elimination of all cryptids from the planet that the Prices defected from generations ago. Add in talking mice (who worship the human prices and record every word ever spoken as gospel and created a religion around them) and you have got an addicting series of books!

Next up came the kindle serialized indexing and Indexing Reflections stories and not only did we get a covert agency dealing with the supernatural but we learned that there is an actual folk lore and fairy tale index!

When I learned she was up for a HUGO, I was super excited! But on Monday, while I was attending parent teacher conferences and mourning the fact I have a high schooler now (who by the way is Seanan Mcguire’s absolute biggest fan) Seanan Mcguire won the HUGO award !!!!

This review is from: The Green’s Hill Novellas (Kindle Edition)
One of the consistencies of Amy Lane’s Greens Hill stories is that they add depth to a world that is filled with magic and love but also tragedy and angst. These stories run the gamut and add depth to character’s that have been a part of the world in minor ways, with the exception of Adrian who is one of the fan favorites. The story of Whim and Charlie adds whimsy to the world we have all come to love and on our least favorite day, Lithia. I love you a******! Really changes the dynamic between Phillip and Marcus. While we all know their taste in women has never quite meshed, in the main novels none of us realize how much drama was behind the understanding that the two men are better together than apart. And Adrian’s story shows us where he resides when he is not stalking the goddess grove–And it’s nowhere you would expect! The fact that Adrian is still a quiet voice in the universe for love and redemption is a surprise to no one, and in fact is comforting. Adrain’s innate goodness shines through, although there is a little bit of sadness and regret as he watches the world move on. It is totally clear that, although his love for Cory and Green is still strong, he wishes that his death had not occurred. It’s hard to watch their lives go on. It is Important to read these before Quickening! So buy this collection and get to know Green’s Hill a little more intimately…

Experiencing a dilemma

cookie0021:

Iā€™ve never faced before. Frankly Iā€™m tired of love triangles. Mostly because thereā€™s an obvious choice of who the main characterā€™s gonna choose; mostly the reason thereā€™s even a hint of competition is because the girl doesnā€™t want to hurt the non-chosen guy:

Jace or Simonā€”duh, Jace wins

Edward or Jacobā€“duh, Edward wins

Dimitri or Adrianā€“duh, Dimitri wins

Adam or Samuelā€“duh, Adam wins

Peeta or Galeā€“duh, Peeta wins

Barrons or V’laineā€“duh, Barrons wins

Bones or Tateā€“duh, Bones wins

Vlad or Maximusā€“duh, Vlad wins

And countless other I canā€™t even remember right now. Granted The Infernal Devices took a novel approach and has the main character get to be with both the men she loved (even though it was obvious she really really loved Willā€“and if forced to choose I think she would have chosen him in the end, but she got both)

My problem is: the Cassandra Palmer series.

One the one hand thereā€™s Mircea who I admitted wasnā€™t in love with to begin with, but nowā€¦after everything Iā€™ve read (including the Dorina Basarab series) I like him. I want him to be happy. I want him to be Cassie because he wants to be with her and she wants to be with him. I like him. Although Iā€™m not too happy about where we were left with him in Tempt the Stars. I hope heā€™s not going to just abandon her. That doesnā€™t seem like the kind of man he is.

On the other hand, thereā€™s Pritkin who Iā€™ve kinda adored since book two, Claimed by Shadows. And my adoration for him has only gotten worse as the series has progressed. I absolutely love him. And I do think heā€™s gonna be the endgame. But Iā€™m not sure.

And Iā€™m torn.

Therein lies the problem.

Iā€™ve never liked both of the guys for a single girl in a series. I may like a guy like say for instance Simon, but I never liked him for Clary. For Izzy, heā€™ll yeah, but never for Clary.

I want both Mircea and Pritkin for Cassie and I donā€™t know what to think.

Aaaggghh.

SO, I keep rereading this post. Ā And I get the overall point, even those of us thatĀ ā€œlikeā€ both the men in Cassieā€™s life equally have favorites. Ā Sometimes, those favorites change from scene to scene but we have favorites. Ā So, who do we root for? Ā  How do we want it to end…Well, Iā€™m just gonna root for Cassie and however messily it ends up, as long as sheā€™s happy Iā€™ll be good…

But for the list at the beginning, I gotta say something. Ā I am very happy for this writer that all choices seem crystal clear. Ā For the rest of us, sometimes we donā€™t know who we are going to pick until after it has happened. Ā  Ā Or, if you are me, it sometimes was one person on one read but the next time its someone else…

So, maybe, its mutable. Ā Maybe, for some like Cat and Bones I didnā€™t even remember there was someone else. Ā But for each one of those, I have Ā an Anita Blake, or a Merry or a Corinne Carol-Anne Kirkpatrick. Ā  And there are messy crazy solutions. Ā

And I donā€™t see Cassie going the way of the many loved. Ā At least I donā€™t think so. Ā But Iā€™ll just keep reminding myself that Iā€™m rooting for Cassie…and being mutable

I discovered my limitations…

So, I like to multitask…I have done it for a long time, but I reached my limit earlier today. Ā I was listening to a book (Iā€™m doing a reread) and working on a review, when my facebook messenger popped up with a note from a friend. Ā I had just started watching an episode of The Americans and I discovered that I cannot read subtitles, type, read, listen to a book and make sense! Ā So, my friends I have hit my limit at least for today!!!
