Fantastic Hope laurell K Hamilton and William McCaskey

Posted on April 7, 2020 inUncategorized

I have had the pleasure of getting an advanced reader copy of Fantastic Hope, the new paranormal anthology that was released on April 7, 2020. This arc was provided via Netgalley, the best place for reviewers and avid readers to get and review new books.  This anthology is a great way to be introduced to a wide variety of authors and writing styles.  You may just buy it for one author and find a whole new library to read during this uncertain time.  With a wide variety of bestselling authors this anthology has a lot of bang for your buck.
While I could go crazy with this book review and write pages upon pages and bury you in paper, time is at a premium.  This anthology is a great way to get acquainted with a number of authors and their writing styles.   You may buy it for the latest in one series and end up with a new series to read, to love, and maybe even obsess about.  These authors each have unique backgrounds and those backgrounds inform each story with details that will delight readers,   .  Rather than going through each story and providing spoilers that might make longtime fans and new readers alike angry, I will cede this space to a part of the Foreword and the words of the editors.
“It’s a place where the hero wins, the bad guy is punished, and the monsters are only real while you’re reading the story. You can close the covers and be safe. Unlike the real terrors of the world online and in the news lately…welcome to a collection of stories where you can find hope, happy endings, loyalty, freedom, love, all the positive things that make the best of us. Welcome to thrilling adventures and a modern take on two-fisted adventure stories…Have faith in yourself, in the people who love you, in magic, in religion, in Deity, in science, and in things harder to label with just one word. Believe that there will be smiles after the tears, joy after the pain, and that it will all work out, that good will triumph and evil will not win forever…You’re holding people’s dreams in your hands, dreams made real for you to read and share. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.”   Laurell K Hamilton
“Laurell is a big proponent of people doing their therapy and working through their shit. We sat over lunch and talked about the depressing stories that seemed to be everywhere, in the news and in fiction, and lamented that there weren’t more uplifting stories…  Laurell and I are both survivors and we know that the world is not all unicorns, rainbows, and glitter. but we also know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that the darkness can be pushed back, even if it starts with a spark….I hope that in this book you find a story that speaks to you that reminds you that tomorrow is a new day with new opportunities.” William McCaskey
Believe again.  Dream again.  Know that you have the power to do the impossible and conquer your demons.  Start a new relationship with favorite authors and new voices.  Start here.

A Book Review or two and a Little Respect

Posted on August 24, 2017 inAdrian, Jeaniene Frost

A couple of days ago, I warned that my posts might seem to be a little surreal because I was starting Jeaniene Frost‘s Night Prince which was the fourth and final installment in the that series.  The reason that required a caveat was that Vlad is the hero int that series and he has a stepson and blood nephew named Mircea.  Given that most of my posts revolve around the Cassandra Palmer and the Dorina Basarab series in which Mircea is a hero and Vlad a villain.  I have to admit that it was difficult even within my own mind to make the switch.  Eventually, though, my brain successfully made the switch and I came to really enjoy the return to the Night Huntress world.  I have to give Jeaniene Frost some mad props.  Mencheres plays a large role in the book and they throw in a stay at Kat and Bones cabin.  What amazes me about this is that Jeaniene Frost is able to successfully end each series and then start another tangential story, one for which the foundations were laid in the process of telling this hero/heroine story.  This means that when the next series, which will revolve around Ian, starts we know that some of our old friends will play a part and, in a way, each successive series is a continuation of the one before.

I also greatly enjoyed the Sweetest Burn, the second story in the Broken Destiny series.  This series is truly unrelated to the other world.  This series revolves around a battle between good in the form of Archons (Angel like beings) and Demons.  These Demons have realms that are just a slight bit misaligned with reality and the heroine, Ivy has long been able to see glimpses of these realms and has a long history of psychiatric treatment due to this ability.  When her sister disappears and her adoptive parents are killed while investigating the disappearance, Ivy decides she will fin and rescue her sister or die in the effort.  This leads to a discovery of the Demons, their realms, minions (humans enlisted by both Archons and Demons to do their will on Earth since there are agreements in place limiting what can be done by the demons and Archons) and the fact that there is something quite special about Ivy.  Ivy is the last descendant who has the blood of David from the biblical story of David and Goliath.  The Archon who informs Ivy of all this brings someone to hep her Adrian, a man who was brought up in the demon realms and switched sides and who also has an illustrious ancestor as well-Jude, the man who betrayed Christ for 30 pieces of silver and who is prophesied to betray Ivy as well.  Apparently there are 3 artifacts that can only be wielded by one of David’s descendants and have become necessary as the walls between the realms are weakening.  Anyways, this second book revolves around a search for a magical staff, the one that Moses used.  When Ivy used the slingshot at the end of the first novel, it became a tattoo embedded in Ivy’s skin and it comes as a great surprise when she learns that it can still be used although not to the same effect as before.  This installment shows Adrian and Ivy’s partnership going to the next level, with a number of ramifications that, of course, only become apparent AFTER the events have occurred.

Sherrilyn Kenyon’s DragonSworn

Posted on August 21, 2017 inlove, Magic, Paranormal, Romance, Sex, Sherrilyn Kenyon

I have long been a Sherrilyn Kenyon fan and continue to be one.  Although the newest series did not live up to my expectations, I am a fan of her worlds.  I love the complex mythology and am constantly amazed by how varied her world has become.  It is a vast network of various mythologies and yet somehow they all seamlessly interact.  This is truly an amazing feat given that Egyptian and Greek and Sumerian Pantheons were never meant to mix.  This book promised explanations of Falcyn’s origins and perhaps even his orneriness.  This book did indeed explain Falcyon and his surliness.

I love the Dark Hunter world as well as the Were Hunter and Lords of Avalon worlds.  I loved this book, as it returns to the stories that are as typical as a book by Sherrilyn Kenyon can be in that they are all atypical.  This book was a little bit difficult for me as there are so very many story lines and interrelationships to try and keep straight.  Even using the website as a cheat sheet, when the Lords of Avalon, dragon, were hunters and dark hunter worlds intersect things can become complicated and this book added in the Apollites as well.  Put a cameo in by Simi and you have all the parts of Kenyon’s world in one place.   It seems that this book may be a two for one in that Blaise makes a romantic connection as well.

So, my review of this book is overwhelmingly positive.  My only complaint is that I have trouble keeping everything straight and that is a failing on my part but given that we book 28 and the length of some of those novels, I’m going to give myself a break.  And admit I used Sherrilyn Kenyon.com as a cheat sheet when I got a little confused, but I figure that is why the character directory is there.

Book Review for Kelley Armstrong’s Rituals (some Spoilers)

Posted on August 21, 2017 inBook Review, Frost, Kelley Armstrong

I have greatly enjoyed visiting Cainsville this past week.  Watching Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky navigate discovering their pasts and the roles they were expected to play was fun and learning along the way with them the paranormal origins and the crazy treatment of those who did not fit into either of the main groups was a crazy ride.  And I have looked forward to the conclusion of this story especially given the surprise at the ending of Betrayals when Ricky stepped aside to give Gabriel his shot with Olivia.

Watching the group fight their past incarnations and the meddling of both sides was frustrating.  In many ways, the urge to just shake the main characters was high.  And yet as each of the succeeding third party scheme and design traps and pitfalls there is a underlying layer of hope–that these three can somehow beat fate.  Each of their previous incarnations are bitter and seem determined to make the same mistakes happen again while they advise Olivia, Gabriel and Ricky not to make the same mistakes.  It’s frustrating.

All through the story, Gabriel’s continuing social dysfunction takes a large role in the story.  And seeing him struggle to be what Olivia needs is painful at times.  Having Gabriel’s mother return and Pamela escape from jail is not only unexpected it is shocking.  And in this last book, finding that the powers who were so desperately awaiting their Matilda made deals that they didn’t consider the ramifications of was just plain disappointing

This end had the potential to be epic.  No matter which decision was made, there could have been closure and healing with the story coming full circle.  Instead of secret male pacts determining the future we could have had a reasoned and equal decision.  Having a strong heroine with two strong males making well reasoned decisions seemed like what was coming.

Instead, Ricky backed off the field and Olivia was so glad to have the least crumb of attention from Gabriel that despite the fact he continued to misstep, Olivia chose Gabriel and then the three of them decided to do what they were told from the very beginning wasn’t an option.  I did not see a happily ever after when this book ended.  I saw continued heartbreak for Olivia as Gabriel continues to misstep.  I see a friendship between Ricky and Olivia that will always have a sexual undertone and a feeling of lost opportunities.  And the relationship between Gabriel and Ricky will always have a petty jealoussness under it.

As sad as the end made me because it took so much of Olivia’s strength and growth and threw it out the window as soon as Gabriel made the least bit of effort, it could have been worse.  I am glad that they end up with neither the elders or the hunt winning.  But instead it seems that everyone loses.

The fifth book and the exciting conclusion to bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series, in which she mixes hard-hitting crime writing with phenomenal world-building to create a brand of fiction all her own. When Olivia Taylor-Jones found out she was not actually the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers, her life exploded. Running from the fall-out, she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois, but she couldn't resist trying to dig out the truth about her birth parents' crimes. She began working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer who also had links to the town; their investigation soon revealed Celtic mysteries at work in Cainsville, and also entangled Olivia in a tense love triangle with the calculating Gabriel and her charming biker boyfriend, Ricky. Worse, troubling visions revealed to Olivia that the three of them were reenacting an ancient drama pitting the elders of Cainsville against the mysterious Huntsmen with Olivia as the prize. In the series' fifth and final novel, not only does Gabriel's drug addict mother, who he thought was dead, make a surprise reappearance, but Kelley Armstrong delivers a final scary and surprising knock-out twist. It turns out a third supernatural force has been at work all along, a dark and malevolent entity that has had its eye on Olivia since she was a baby and wants to win at any cost.

How you can Help…

Posted on August 13, 2017 inBook Review, Books, good, love, Paranormal, Romance

I’m a reader-always have been. What does that mean? It means that from Kindergarten through eighth grade, my favorite day of the month was when the scholastic book order forms came in and then the day the books actually arrived. I always ordered way more than I could possibly read and lugging those boxes of books home was like the eighth night of hannukkah and my birthday all rolled into one…

When my children were younger, it meant reading books sometimes a word at a time, but I always had a book with me and I will admit to great pride that I finished any books at all with my children at toddler age. Now it means always having a book loaded on my phone to play or read every opportunity I get.

For me, books are a necessity. I cannot imagine a world without books. If something was wrong in my life, most times being swallowed into a story would make it better or at the very least put off the problem until I could find a solution. Reading gave me time to assimilate, a place where all my life’s problems could be put on a shelf for a while. I could visit fantastical worlds where magic and all things were possible. I could bear witness to amazing legal battles and see fancy balls from all the ages. I could see love triumph over incredible odds. There was no end to what I might find between the covers of a book.

As I have grown older and my burdens have become heavier, I have found that sometimes books bring me a simple distraction and I have also found that the characters in these books can become friends in a way. I am fully aware that the characters in my favorite books are fictional, but I worry over their lives as I would a friend. And I have found that having these books I love so very much has brought me some true friends along the way. Those friendships start with a conversation when we notice we are reading the same book or author and can develop into deep discussions and speculation.

And that love of books brought me to this blog. In reaching out to my favorite authors I found that they were struggling. Niche Publishing Houses had gone out of business, and the big publishing houses were mismarketing the books{marketing an urban fantasy book as a traditional romance, leaving the consumers of both urban fantasy and traditional romance unhappy)-so that when contract negotiations for more books began, the publisher could point to bad sales. The publishing house has complete control over when the books are released as well–and with a few different authors, they keep announcing dates, then pushing them back with no communication. That led to a number of angered fans, some of whom have sworn off the authors entirely. Also, some of the authors had felt very comfortable with the niche houses and so left broad areas in their contracts because of the level of trust that existed. Now those broad areas are leaving them with little contractual wigggle room, allowing the big houses to do many things without the authors input or consent. Bad pairings were being made between authors and editors which led to bad books and a loss of loyal fans.

A few of those authors told me that the best thing I can do to help is write reviews and generate buzz around their latest releases. This led me to this blog and now I am finding that I need to generate followers in order to get electronic ARC’s so I can create bigger buzz leading up to the release of the books.

So, I need your help. First, find my facebook link at the end of this post and like the page. There is also a twitter account associated with the blog. In order to raise my Search Engine rankings, please search for my website address in whichever search engine you use whenever you have a chance.

Breaking News from Karen Chance

Posted on August 7, 2017 inKaren Chance

I am amazed that this needed to be said, but as Karen said apparently it was necessary!

Public Service Announcement

Published August 5, 2017 | By admin

In the past few days, I have received repeated emails from people unhappy about Ride the Storm supposedly being the last book in the Cassandra Palmer series. They were angry that I hadn’t tied up every single strand and given them a proper send off. They were distressed because someone, somewhere, had told them that this was the last book and they believed it.

It occurred to me that, if I was getting repeated emails, there might be more people out there who believed the same thing, but who hadn’t dropped me a line. So here, for the record, is my official take on this: this is not the last book.

Originally, there were supposed to be nine books in the series, three interwoven trilogies, each dealing with a different challenge for Cassie to face. A sort of “Big Bad” around which her other adventures were framed. This book completes the second of these “trilogies” (the quotation marks are because they each took four books to complete, not three as originally intended.) So we have a ways still to go. I am not saying, btw, that there are exactly four books left; I am saying that it will take at least that many to complete the original design.

Thank you for reading this boring post, but apparently, I needed to get this out there.”

Dark Rites (Krewe of Hunters) by Heather Graham

Posted on July 27, 2017 inBook Review, Heather Graham, Krewe of Hunters

It always amazes me when an author can create a large body of work.  Heather Graham has managed to create a compelling series of books in the Krewe of Hunters.  One of the ways that she has managed to keep the series interesting and relevant is by constantly mixing up the main characters as new agents join the unit.  All the other main characters and their romantic partners are still a part of the story.  And there are times when the original krewe gets involved as well as the newer group of agents.

This story follows up on the heels of the last book.  Vicki Preston and Griffin Pryce are preparing for the move to Virginia when Alex Maple, who has become a friend after helping them with the undertaker murders is brutally attacked.  As they investigate the crime, it becomes more and more bizarre, involving both history and satanism.  2 more krewe members, Devin and Rocky have come to help as they were traveling to Salem anyway.  The case becomes quite involved and Alex is kidnapped.

This was a fun read and a great addition to the Krewe of Hunters series!

Christine Feehan’s Shadow Reaper

Posted on July 27, 2017 inBooks, Christine Feehan

In this second book in Christine Feehan’s newest series, we get to really learn about the shadows and the world in which they live.  We get to see more of the family dynamics and get to see the family in action and learn about the families and the command structure in the Shadow world.

We get to see the relationship between Francesca and Stefano deepen almost exponentially.  And we get introduced to the damaged Rico and see his past return.  And we get to see that Rico’s silence tests the ties that bind the Ferraro family together.  Those bonds are far stronger than any of the family knew and we get to see a truly fascinating family dynamic–where each member is stronger than the parts individually.

This is a brilliant new series and I enjoyed every moment of it.  I truly cannot recommend this series more highly!

Rachel Caine’s Stillhouse Lake

Posted on July 26, 2017 inBook Review, Rachel Caine

This book is a departure for Rachel Caine, but it was still a great read.  It starts with a “typical” housewife who is happy in her life until, in a Blackbeard’s wife situation, it is discovered that her husband has been kidnapping, torturing and killing women in the families garage.  After being tried as an accomplice, she takes her kids and runs, buying fake identities and running anytime it appears that she may be found out.

She’s found a place that she likes, though, and decides to fight to keep her life there despite the fact that murders similar to the ones her husband committed start occurring.  And in the process she finds an ally whom she ends up falling in love with.  And it may be just in time, too, as her husband escapes just at the books end.  Can’t wait to read book two!

Review of Come Sundown by Nora Roberts

Posted on July 26, 2017 inBooks, Nora Roberts

I have long been a Nora Roberts fan and am constantly amazed by the number of novels she writes and they are usually always a good read.  Sometimes they do end up recycling old themes and some books do have remarkable similarities.  This doesn’t bother me though because each story has its own unique attributes and qualities.  That being said, this book was a huge disappointment to me.

I went into the book expecting a story about a family and a central love affair.   This book was not about the strength of a family or multi generational love stories.  If anything, it was the story of the kidnapping, torture, rape and indoctrination of one female who was the black sheep of her family and on her way home when her life skipped the track.

Nora Roberts has had some dark books that were still exceptional, but this was not one of them.  I kept expecting it to improve and for it to all come together but it never did.  This is one of the worst Nora Roberts books I have ever read.  Do not buy or read this book.  It is brutal with rape, beatings and indoctrination into a loosely bible based theology.

I look forward to discussing all of this with fellow fans at my site bestbooklover.net and at the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BestBooklovernet-336745780072074/

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose—and her mind has been shattered...
